Luma was curled up in a comfortable chair, with a book in her hands and a pumpkin spice latte on the side table. She'd had one for the first time a few days ago, and found herself craving more, especially as the days began to cool down.

Despite that craving, however(my God, what did they put in them???), her was currently sitting there mostly untouched, her attention snagged by the pages of her book and the absolutely devastating story being laid out in those words. It had everything she loved: a dark and gloomy setting, a tragic heroine, a sense of dread and foreboding and hopelessness...so far very good. She hoped they didn't ruin it in the end by not having the terrible love interest meet a horrible end by its finale, though.

But she wouldn't know until she got there, and she was making swift progress toward finding out.

Tony and Steve had gone to Manhattan after their class on Thursday and gotten bagels to bring back to Fandom, but somehow (Steve) they had all been eaten (Steve) in the past four days (Steve, and also Fee).

So now they were back in the city for a new, bigger batch to take home with them, and to appreciate the start of autumn in the city with a walk through Central Park, which was just enough nature for two born-and-bred city boys.

"This is nice," Steve said around a mouthful of food.

Again? Really? Alright, let's get this done quickly. I've got plans today, you know.

Let's see those notes. We have... Lucifer returning in time for Octavia's birthday to the delight of both her and Duke. Raiden... that's a lot of hearts around his name... well, he was particular about safety in decorations at Over Easy. Navy Steve stopped in to catch up and share the health issues that had kept him away. One of our newest residents, Greg was enjoying the park where Jon met him and explained a bit about how the island works. With a lot of gossip, honestly.

But that seems to be all we've got. So, excuse me, I have a date in the city.

The last changes to the course were pissing Rey off. Which, honestly, was probably why she needed them and she realized that but they were pissing her off. She'd gone this morning before work, accumulated some new bruises, and was now angrily working while angrily drinking a pumpkin spice latte.

Was she going to go back after this in case this time she got it right? Of course she was.

Was Sunday a workday? Not technically. Was the current mayor a workaholic who had only recently started adopting slightly more reasonable work times on account of the former Winter Soldier in her building? Also yes.

So it shouldn't really be a surprise that Jesse was in her office this Sunday, going through an overwhelming stack of forms for the school's upcoming vacation trip.

"I should really get a ticket for all the work I put into this," she muttered, then realized her assistant was enjoying her weekend in a more traditional way. "... But I wouldn't know what to do with it anyway."

Sigh.

Around noon, Gregorith had finally felt put together enough to venture forth. So after masking his appearance (he suspected he was being overly cautious in that regard but the mun had made such a fuss about it this place reminded him enough of the Mortal Realm he felt more comfortable this way) he'd headed out for a bout of exploration.

And now he found himself in the park, pondering the troll statues.

Raiden was allowing the staff at Over Easy to decorate for Halloween. Within reason. He didn't want it to look like a haunted house in here, and if he didn't set guidelines fast Gray would go overboard on Wednesday.

"No, no fake cobwebs! They're terrible for small animals. Will no one think of the squirrels?"

Entrapping the squirrels might have been the idea, actually, but no one was going to admit it to Raiden.

Good morning, everyone, and welcome to another installment of the news, as transcribed by the squirrels and faithfully reported by me, Miss Lydia Bennet. Let's get into it, shall we?

We begin with the school, where Lord Thor was absent from Weather & Storms but the students had a no doubt educational film to watch in his stead. I've nothing from the dormitory, so we shall move along to the town. It seems that Mr. Henry of Skalitz has obtained a new job at the forge, and we've a new person in town, a Mr. Gregorith. It seems that he's a demon. I wonder if he knows Wickham. He made the acquaintance of Mr. LeBeau, who explained about that whole...dimensional nexus business. And the squirrels. Oh, good, so you've learned about the radio, sir! Welcome! And congratulations to the students who arrived at the start of term on shedding their 'the new ones' status.

At Needful Things, Dr. Quinn was decorating for your Halloween, as was Miss Eleanor with some gourds at Plant Parenthood. Miss Blake communed with nature in the Preserve, whilst Miss Skywalker was alarmed by the woodchucks at her warehouse, and discussed them and the alterations made by Mrs. Skywalker-Fel with Dean Skywalker. And finally, at the Trooper Station, Detective Watts received a delivery of flowers. And that seems to be the last of my notes, so I'm off for a cup of tea. Farewell until next week, dear listeners!

Good morning, everyone! This is Captain Steve Rogers with yesterday's news.

*chittering*

Yes, and bagels from Manhattan. I'm not sure if you deserve any, though.

In classes, Liliana's Zombie class did Supermarket Sweep but with zombies, then she went to her office, watched old episodes and decided she and Ignis would destroy everyone on it. Food Adventures had a pasta making class, Belle dodged gremlin shoes in the library, and Tony and I had our class make salads that aren't salads in baking class.

*chittering*

There is nothing wrong with cottage cheese in salads!

In town, Pam had new autumn-colored potted flowers, so that's very helpful if you are celebrating Canadian Thanksgiving on Monday or just wanting to get seasonal. Liz worked on email, Remy had coffee at the Perk, Mary was enjoying Taylor Swift's new album, and Thor was making a drink with dry ice at the Devil's Nest. I'll trade some bagels for a drink!

Watts and Steven had lunch, Steph was decorating for Halloween at the Magpie Emporium with the less-helpful help of Vi, currently a cat, and Watts came in for sparkly dice. Finally, Supper Club went to Slainte--

*chittering*

Yes, that's how you pronounce that. They had Irish food and Henry, Lydia, and Flint were all thrilled with the familiarity of the cuisine.

And that's everything! Enjoy your weekend!

The station was quiet today. Quieter even than usual, without a single phone call regarding bees or garden gnomes or raccoons.

So Watts was spending his time being very productive: by fiddling with the Rubik's cube he kept in a desk drawer for just such occasions.

Eleanor was in the mood for carving today. Not just pumpkins, either, but all manner of gourds, which she felt made for much more interesting designs. She waa Novartis by any margin, but it was a good way to pass the time between helping customers and promoting all sorts of spices they had for a variety of seasonal ills and thrills.

She would probably stock up on cinnamon and nutmeg for herself, too, but she had a feeling Luma would just complain about the smell.

Plant Parenthood is open!

Rey hadn't been to the warehouse since she'd come back, so she was unaware of any changes that had been made in her absence.

So imagine her surprise when she'd gotten inside and up over the quicksand, just in time to see a woodchuck launched in the air from a certain part of the course.

For as alarmed as she was, the other woodchucks gathered around it where it landed, and when he stood up, it sounded like they all cheered?

It had taken over a week of being back on the island, but Octavia had finally made it into the preserve. And much like always, the further into the woods that she walked, the more freely she felt like she could breathe, the more full her lungs felt with every inhale.

She walked in far enough that she could no longer see anything except the trees in any direction.

And then she sat down.

And she pushed her hands into the undergrowth. Her fingers into the soil. Everything was an attempt to connect, lately. With her people, with her surroundings, with herself.

And some efforts were more physical than others.

That particular Friday, it was extremely easy to find Harley in her store. Because she was in the window, getting it all decked out in vintage Halloween glory.

How many decades old cardboard Jack o' Lantern cutouts did one store window need? This many.

Needful Things was open, and the manager was hyper focusing.

Henry had walked past the forge many a time. It had always drawn from him a certain professional curiosity - but also pain, confusion, memories. And... it had always been closed.

So he might have peered in a window or two, but he'd never been inside.

And yet, that morning, as he walked past, he'd found one of the double doors to the forge creaked slightly open. He'd followed his curiosity inside, and. Well.

An hour or so later, he was standing by the anvil in the middle of the room, near a worktable, a mild confusion in his eyes. Had he just gotten a job? He wasn't sure. Still-- a forge was a forge, the equipment looked familiar, the smell drenched him in a sense of home, and he felt more settled here than he had in some time.

Perhaps at some point he'd even chance to light the bloody thing and see how well it worked.

Today's library nonsense?

Gremlin shoes. Gremlin shoes that did not remain on gremlin feet.

"You don't even wear shoes most of the time," Belle told a group of them. "So there's no reason to wear on them in here just to take them off and steal them from each other and leave them strewn about the library?"

Because they were gremlins, Belle. Obviously.

"Stop throwing shoes!"

It was, perhaps, going to be a very long day.

Mary was in her showgirl era. Admittedly, she had been in her showgirl era long before Taylor Swift picked up a guitar, but now Mary was embracing it. Today, she was wearing a strapless corset-top dress covered in blue sequins. As the weather had gotten cooler, she had also thrown on an orange cardigan. A pair of blue stiletto heels completed the look. She had Taylor's "The Life Of A Showgirl" playing on her phone for the millionth time as she went through paperwork at the front desk.

Remy had just returned to the island after dealing with some handwavily and non-canon mutant crisis in his universe.

There was always another mutant crisis. He tried to stay optimistic, but it was tough when there was always another mutant crisis.

Anyway, it was a groggy and sleep deprived and somewhat battered Remy who found his way to the coffee shop for a caffeine infusion before heading home to see to his cats.

"If you got anything chicory, that'd be great," he said. "Otherwise -- large, hot, strong, and keep it coming." His eyes landed on the pastry case. ". . . And the largest chocolate chip muffin you got."

Once he had his order, he slouched into a seat near the window to watch the island go by.

Steve and Tony were standing behind their own contribution of a bake sale Showstopper: brownies, Rice Krispie treats with entirely too many sprinkles that somehow also managed to be too crunchy, and a gluten-free...something...that was definitely healthy and sort of cake-adjacent? Maybe? Kind of crepe-like?

Look, your teachers were not amazing bakers. Hopefully the students were getting better, though. "Hi!" Steve said enthusiastically. "We can't wait to try your bake sales!"

"It'll be something to try before we get into salads," Tony said. "Which aren't quite the salads we think of these days. The start will be your take on either chicken, egg, or tuna salad. A deli classic."

Who didn't like a mayo based salad?

"Because it's a baking class," Steve said, "you also have to bake your choice of carb to put your salad in: crackers, flat bread, bagels if you're feeling especially fancy--"

"Egg salad on a sesame seed bagel," Tony sighed like it would be the best food in the world. Which might have been putting his thumb on the scale, but whatever. "We're going into the city after this. Decided."

"Yes," Steve said, grinning. "We'll bring you back bagels," he promised the class. "And after we've tried those salads, your technical challenge is a Midwest classic of a salad that isn't a salad because it's dessert!"

Why, Upper Midwest. Why?

"The cottage cheese jello salad." Oh, Tony had regrets already.

"Yum!" Steve, no.

Tony shot him a concerned look for that. "And then, for homework, we want you to make us a layered jello dish with a design inside it."

"But not the American flag," Steve said. "That's too easy."

Was it, though?
