Edge, Saturday Afternoon

It was a good thing that Bat Eyes were so damn easy to take down, Reno mused, as he wiped some bloody monster sludge off of his baton and onto his pant leg. Things had been busy in Edge over the past few days. A few monsters had wandered into the outskirts of the town out of the ruins of what used to be the Midgar slums, and they were having their hungry ways with the locals.

Which suited Reno just fine. He got the pleasure of being hired on by the WRO in order to take care of the threat while they continued working on setting up their military, and on top of the pay that they were giving him to deal with the job, he got to keep whatever the monsters dropped when he took them down, too. Mostly ethers and bubblegum money, but he could live with that.

He finished rummaging through what was left of the corpse of the last one as it faded away to join the lifestream, or whatever it was that dead monsters did, and then he took a seat on the nearest bench, sprawling out, looking up at the bluish-gray haze of sky above him, pulling out his phone, and turning it on.

Sometimes, rebuilding wasn't really so bad after all.

It was a bare few minutes when the phone in question rang. Loudly.

The phone, it was ringing! In a demanding, almost pushy sort of way.

Reno had himself a good chuckle as he checked the caller ID before answering.

"Yo, Arthur! You startin' to master the Blackberry already, huh? Fast learner!"

"I've only been trying for ten minutes!" Arthur told him, like it was something to be proud of. "So I'd say I'm settling well. Reno. Afternoon."

"It is afternoon," Reno agreed, smirking upward at the sky. It even almost looked like daytime up there, too. "To what do I owe the pleasure of this afternoon phone call, yo?"

"I wanted to speak with you about a new arrival to our island," said Arthur, who apparently didn't understand 'brevity in phone calls' just yet.

Reno had faith that he'd catch on. At least he wasn't shouting random words at him, anymore.

"You got some kinda problem with one of the newbies or somethin', Arthur? That ain't nothin' a good kick in the seat of the pants'll usually fix, you know."

"Not a problem," Arthur said, somewhat briskly (for his standards). "Leto and I have decided to bring in an apprentice to the leadership position in the reserve."

Which was political-ese for I'm trying to get some third sucker to show up to run these things so things will remain pleasant between me and my roommate and no one will have to be tossed off a cliff into the ocean at any point.

"One of our candidates claims to be a countryman of yours."

Dianh had told him how to use the phone, so Leto thought it was only right to call Reno and let him know.

Reno had gotten so immersed in the haze of sky above him that he damn near jumped out of his pants when it rang yet again. Popular Turk was popular, today!

"Reno speakin'!"

You know, in case whoever was phoning him didn't already know. Or something.

"Hello Reno, this is Leto." He spoke clearly, not sure how well the sound was transferred. "Arthur gave me the phone you sent."

"And you figured out how to use it," Reno noted. Daaamn, he felt proud. He was corrupting little non-technological minds left and right! "Good goin', Leto!"

"Dinah taught me," Leto confessed. He might not be quite comfortable with the amount of technology in Fandom, but he wasn't going to let Reno know. "She also taught me to send photographs and music," he added.

"Heeey! Blackmail!" Reno was grinning. Could Leto hear the grin in his voice? "You figured out how to use the camera on that thing, then?"

[intraspective]

"If you want a cheerful diversion," Ino said dryly, as she answered her phone, "then I'm fresh out. Also, phones on vibrate are damn freaky when you're balancing on a staff in mid-air."

Reno couldn't help but grin a little, at that.

"And here I was, missin' the cheery sound of my favorite ninja's voice," Reno replied, sounding more or less bemused. "I didn't know you were a vibrate kinda girl, Ino."

Yes, Reno thought he was clever, sometimes.

"I bet, given time, I could find a portal to your world and come stab you in the face," she said, her voice wry despite the threat. "I mean, fancy phone or not, they lack stabbing capabilities."

"They do," Reno agreed, "an' that's a very sad thing. The day someone invents a stabby-phone, that's the day I'll be a happy man, yo."

Imagine the possibilities!

Reno would phone Cloud Strife every day.

"I'm willin' to place bets that you've been havin' a shitty day."

[intraspective]

"I want a stabby phone now," she informed him. "It would be fun."

Ino would abuse it so much.

"Meh. Better day than yesterday, but not really up to dealing with, you know, meaningful interaction."

"Hey, talkin' with me ain't never meaningful," Reno protested. "I'll have you know that I'm the biggest waste of time you'll ever talk to on a phone for twenty minutes, yo!"

He was oddly proud of this fact, yes.

"It seems like stealing," Elena said, as she strolled up to Reno. "Getting paid and getting to keep what they drop. But if Reeve wants to waste Rufus's money, that's fine by me."

She frowned, noticing something off in his expression. "Something happen?"

"Nah. Maybe? Not yet. But yes, already. Fuck."

Reno sat up, the remains of what had to be his third cigarette sticking out of the corner of his mouth.

"I dunno. You know, these Bat Eyes only drop like, fifteen freakin' gil each. The way I see it, they're just payin' the interest until the checks come in, zoto."

That chunk of the conversation seemed easier to just get out of the way.

Which meant the other part of the conversation was more interesting, and they should head there directly.

"No, maybe, no, yes, fuck," Elena repeated, eyebrows raised. "You're usually a better liar."

"And usually the dead like to stay that way," Reno grumbled, glowering up at the sky. Or the gray haze that was supposed to be sky. He was so going to turn on his star lamp tonight, damn it. "Friggin' Fandom."

Elena froze in place. "Not again," she insisted. It was almost a plea. "That bastard hasn't even been dead a year this time."

"Nah, not again." Reno's tone was almost lazy as he said that, pulling himself to his feet and resting his baton on his shoulder. "Not the same bastard, even."

Look, Zack was SOLDIER. They were all bastards, dammit.
