Room 429, Friday Afternoon

After class, Reno headed back to his room. His nice, quiet room. To play with his ferret. Because this Parents Weekend thing was for the birds, and he didn't keep birds. Or have parents. So he figured he was pleasantly safe.

"Not even funny," Reno said dryly, though he was still grinning. It was hard not to grin upon the realization that your best buddy and your... boss... thing had made their way to a different world just to harass you over a weekend. "We just got over a case of the weirds, man. You turn her over to the bald side, I'm gonna have to... kick you, or some shit."

"Case of the weirds" sounded bad. Rude made a note to ask about it later, over drinks.

"Don't worry," he told Reno. "Her hair would grow back."

Tseng's glance flickered to Rude, wondering if he knew what a 'case of the weirds' was supposed to mean.

"Elena is in Edge," he said. "She informed us that if we get into serious trouble, that we are to call her, so that she can have a good laugh at our expense."

Reno shot Tseng a wry grin, stooping down to the floor to try to woo the ferret away from his boss's unfortunate shoes.

"See," he mused, "she's a natural at this Turks gig, yo. She's probably hangin' out at Seventh Heaven or somethin' as we speak, placin' bets with Tifa or somethin' to see how long it takes before you two are eaten by a teal deer or a wallaby or my ferret, zoto."

Mako was now proceeding to demonstrate his fearsome war-dance across the floor, bouncing and honking and doing an impromptu somersault on his way to mercilessly terrorize Reno's hand.

"Turks don't get eaten," Rude told him. Behind his shades, his eyes flicked to Tseng. "She's probably telling Tifa how hot Cloud is."

"I was under the impression that Tifa knew that, already," Tseng said smoothly. Partly to tease Rude, and partly to get the subject away from Elena. He tilted his head. "Is your ferret sick?"

"Sick?" Reno blinked up at Tseng, and then down at Mako, who was happily bounce-tripping along the floor, forgetting where in the world he was going, backtracking two or three steps, and then veering off in other directions entirely. "Naaaah. He's just stupid. I wanted to name him 'Dumbass,' but Rikku wouldn't let me. Ain't that right, Mako? Who's a dumb little shit? Is it you? I bet it's you, you dumb shit!"

Mako LOVED the attention! ME! MEEEEE. I'm the dumb shit! YAAAY!

"He... takes after his father," Rude observed, amused by the ferret.

Reno blinked up at Rude, confused for a moment.

"You met Mako's old man? Ferret?"

.... He really didn't think of himself as the ferret's dad. He wasn't one of them furries, or whatever, okay?

That got the tiniest bit of a grin out of Rude. "I meant you, dumb shit."

"I cannot believe your girlfriend vetoed such a kind name as 'Dumbass,'" Tseng observed.

Partly to see if Reno would clarify whether 'girlfriend' was no longer correct.

"No kiddin', right?" Reno totally didn't see what was wrong with the name. Really. "I think Dumbass kinda suits him. So I snuck it into his name anyhow. Mako Dumbass the first. Uh. Not that I'm plannin' on starvin' him out or whatever so I gotta get a second or nothin'. Just, 'Mako Dumbass' seemed kinda plain."

Reno pointed Mako off toward Rude, gave him a little 'go get'im' smack on the but, and sent the ferret wheeling off in the big guy's direction.

Bending down to play with the ferret was NOT something Rude was likely to do, ever. EVER. He just wasn't that sort of guy.

... Okay, maybe a little.

If you ever wanted to see a grown man cuddle and pet a ferret while attempting to retain his dignity and LOOK like he didn't want anything to do with the animal, now was your chance.

"Does he ever run out of energy?"

"Yep!" Reno sounded entirely too proud of his ferret, just then. "When he sleeps, and you think he's dead? He ain't. Scared the freakin' piss outta me the first time he did it, yo."

Mako liked this guy! He was all big and snuggly and he was gonna honk and wiggle and yaaaaaaay, attention!

"Then he's perfect for you," Tseng said. Seeming very, very amused by the matter. "Will you be giving us the grand tour of town, or do Rude and I have to investigate the matter ourselves?"

"I've already seen the town," Rude pointed out.
