Yo. This is Reno, obviously not answering the phone. If you knew how to call my phone in the first place, you sure as hell know how to leave a message. Oh, look. A beep, yo.

Beep!

On her phone, there was the following text message: Romeo asked if I'd kill babies on orders. I said yes. Fantastic day, no really. How bout you?

Ino stared at her phone for a while, then hit send. She didn't know when he'd get it, but whatever, it wasn't like there were many who'd get the on-orders bit on-island, and it made her feel a bit better to whine just a little.

It'd been while since Dinah talked to Reno, so she decided just to leave a message with the highlights:

"Alligators! Goldfish! Crazy hormones. Guy named Zack! From your world! Guy you don't know named George. Embarrassment! In the play again. Arthur has a phone. HA. Having fun! Wish you were here."

And after a beat where Dinah almost hung up:

"This was your verbal Twitter from Dinah Lance! AKA Tweety. Gah."

Late late on Sunday night, Dinah remembered, and sent greenhouse plans and more greenhouse plans to Reno, along with a list of supplies, and a note: Anything you can't get in Midgar, let me know! - Dinah

One day, Reno might stop getting vaguely distressing messages from her.

One day. Ino figured that this was part of her being one of his Rookies. She was totally allowed to dump her issues in his lap and expect him to have answers.

Which would be why:

What are your thoughts on the differences between killing your friends because you were ordered to and had to make the conscious decision to go through with it, or being ordered to and having no choice but to go through with it because you'd been brainwashed?

Ino hit send.

Five minutes later she sent another message:

...I haven't been ordered to kill my friends fyi. And then sent that.

Package!

Sent Wednesday from Fandom Island, was a wooden crate marked in huge letters: FRAGILE, THIS SIDE UP, and HANDLE WITH CARE.

Ino didn't believe in taking chances here, after all.

Inside the crate, all insanely carefully packed, were:

- Two high-quality, medium-sized sun lamps
- High-quality potting soil
- One seedling tray was carefully marked with 'RADISHES'
- One seedling tray was carefully marked with 'PEAS'
- A notebook reminding him of how to take care of the both of them

The whole thing was topped off with the message of: TAKE CARE OF THEM, OR I'LL KILL YOU DEAD THREE TIMES OVER. AT MINIMUM. - Y.I.

It made her feel better, to do something good like that, after the crappy week it was shaping out to be.

"Hey, Reno. Getting you some new plants. I thought, maybe... "

Having been in a place like Reno's world, albeit one much worse with vampires and isolation, Dinah was feeling extra-grateful for being in a rich and free place right now.

"Um. Cucumbers, and sweet peppers, those are easy. Zucchini, that's supposed to grow like crazy, it tastes boring but you can put salt on it, fry it, then it's pretty good."

"There was another invasion. Type. Thing." Dinah wandered around her room, then tried to smile. "We got through it? Our bodies stayed here, our minds went somewhere else." She swallowed. "I died. Um. Over there. Ended back here."

So lame. "So yeah, give me a call, when you have time. Okay? I hope things are going well with the greenhouses. Pat Mako for me. Bye, Reno."

It was so late that it was early when Ino sent Reno her text(s).

Zack wants to know what he can do to help your Midgar. Gil, supplies, stuff that you guys had his time, but not yours. I told him I'd ask you--so? And--we talked. A bit. About alternate futures. I told him his wasn't yours and he had to remember that and I had experience with that 'cause I know someone who is dead in my world, but not dead in their version of my world. And told him to love and care for his world, rather than focus on a possible future. Was that okay?

She ran out of space, stupid thing, and sent that one.

Why would someone tell him That? I don't get it. And--told him, about finding flowers outside. Didn't think you'd mind that, didn't say anything else 'bout it, though said you're growing beans. He thinks that's awesome, btw. Sent that.

I've been talking to people, too. Not about that. But in general.

And sent.

At least it was cheerier than the last few texts she'd sent him?

[identity profile] blondecanary.livejournal.com 2009-09-10 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
A crate arrived, with:

5 T-bone steaks packed in dry ice
10 frozen dinners, different kinds
1 bottle of scotch, half-frozen
5 cans of frozen orange juice concentrate
More print-outs and plans for home-made water purifiers
A couple of boxes of pasta, better than Ramen
Another seed assortment, low-water vegetables
And an assortment of slinkies and superballs, to keep people entertained

and note: Things going well. Hope they are there too! - Dinah

[identity profile] findingelena.livejournal.com 2009-09-22 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
The package Elena finally sent was actually three separate crates, crammed full of groceries. Mostly non-perishables, but there was also some canned fruit and other things that might go bad quickly. That was why she'd paid an arm and leg for overnight shipping.

The note attached:

My class about religion celebrated a holiday today where you break a month-long fast with a huge feast, and then go and take food to people in need. I didn't have the fast, but we had the feast for class, and it seems wrong to take just that part. So ... please take these where they'll do the most good.

Ino's text wasn't an emergency or anything but definitely had a strong hint of sulk throughout it. Mostly it was an update... thing.

Aliiive, yo. Got called for training back home and missed most of weekend you were around. Unfair, geez. Am doing fine, promise.

Which was a lie thanks to nightmares, but whatever. Physically she was doing fine. That totally counted.

Ino might, one day, get tired of texting Reno with random stuff.

Today... was not that day.

wind fire water—which would you choose? got a new sib--she’s cute--and there were some boys who braved shirtlessness and stuff at the picnic. hi!

It totally counted as a report. Or something. Emphasis on something.

[identity profile] blondecanary.livejournal.com 2010-01-05 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Another care package, this one with:

15 mini-slinkies in rainbow colors

12 cans of orange juice-- and pineapple juice for a change
1 bottle of vodka

1 big bag assorted seeds

1 tin of Alfred cookies, nom
3 bottles of multi-vitamins again, yummy gummie ones

[From here!]

"Why would I even care about what gods are right or not? I don't got a god, the way you people think of them and if you think that's a personal problem of mine well maybe you ought to put down the phone or something—I ain't insultin' you for no reason, yeah?"

A beat.

"And if you did want to innuendo at me? It's a bit weird to tell me 'bout that when you're busy going on 'bout gods and sayin' you never did, you know. Might want to change your tactics there."

Ino didn't normally send care packages--figuring that if he really actually needed something he'd ask (which may or may not have been a good assumption, but) and knowing that she was better helping him with the plants than... figuring out what to buy.

That didn't stop her, however, after the Weekend From Hell (though the snuggling had been nice) going out and buying as many of Turtle & Canary's chemical heating pads as she could and stuffing them in a crate, by the box, to mail to Reno.

It was a rather large crate, really. She was very pleased with herself for that.

The note that went with it was: For sharing! I know you would anyway, but there's enough here that you'd better keep at least a few for yourself or I will come and beat you to death, got it? The rest can go to the kids and stuff, yeah?

The cold sucks. Suuucks.

SO.

Sometime around midday, Reno got a picture mailed to him.

Of a crispy-fried gremlin bleeding all over the clinic floor. There was more blood than one of them could account for and if he looked closely he might spot the arm of another dead gremlin just at the edge of the picture.

Ino debated leaving a real message then shrugged. Eh. He'd assume if she was well enough to be mailing pictures that she was well enough anyway.

package!

Momoko's glare was apparently effective, and the handwavy NPC delivery guy promised to have the package delivered to Reno ("No, not Nevada. Who's Nevada? It's for my sister's boyfriend, RENO, R-E-N-O!") intact, slightly chilled, and immediately. Why?

Because inside was a small pink box. Inside would be a handful of small handmade chocolate hearts and a note,

"Happy Valentines, Reno!! I made chocolates this year and I was sending some to Rikku and wanted to send you some too! I hope you like them! Hope you're doing okay. Sorry that I keep missing you when you visit Fandom. Your Friend, Momoko"

Ino wasn't sure how serious the weird fog was but she was trying to get better at keeping people in the loop. Which explained the text she sent out Wednesday morning.

There's strange fog outside and people who go out in it get weird. I haven’t gone out but radio says it’s pretty widespread. Just a heads up--I don't know how serious it is.

It looked silly written out like that but she hit send anyway. They deserved to know, even if it made her feel ridiculous.

It was fog. Weirded out by fog. Ugh.
